Nick Dunn the club's fitness coach returned from the 'ITU Triathlon World Championships' in Australia in September 2009 as the age group triathlon world champion for his category of 25-30. The triathlon event in which he won gold consisted of a one mile open water sea swim, a 25 mile (40km) bike ride and finished with a 7 mile (10km) run. He raced against 3000+ athletes from around the world recording the fastest run split of the all the competitors and was the top British finisher.

Although he was aiming for a top ten position he surprised himself and did not expect to win "I had an average start in the swim and then when I got on my bike and lost my water bottle straight away I thought I was in trouble'. Being a little dehydrated in 30 degree heat only made me bike faster so I could get onto the run and get some fluids down me! Surprisingly I got off the bike in 13th place and ran through the field to take 1st - I needed water and had a few blisters but that 'winning feeling' numbed the discomfort. I was so happy to have won and it proves that all the hard work does pay off and you should never give up even if things are going wrong.

Out of the swim

Nick had a great 2009 season winning most of the races he entered, being crowned world champion and winning many awards including Rushcliffe sports person of the year and the British Triathlon age group athlete of the Year.

For 2010, Nick plans to continue coaching other athletes as well as race the national elite series in the UK. He will represent Great Britain again in July at the European championships and in September at the world championships - where he hopes to defend his world title.
