National Champions - November 2005On Saturday, the club senior (men 55, women 50) mixed team beat Aylesbury at the Next Generation Club in Dudley. This competition is open to all clubs in Britain and, as far as we know, this is the first national title a club team has ever won. It is a massive achievement and the team deserve great congratulations. The team was Margaret Fincham and Gerry Radford, 1st pair, and Jill Shelvey (captain) and David Carter (club joint manager), 2nd pair. At a happy lunch West Bridgford had what seemed an unassailable 2-0 lead, but the second round progressed rapidly to 2-1 and dangerously close to a 2-2 result, but a lost match on sets countback. The whole match depended on the last set, before Gerry and Margaret wrapped it up 6-1 in an increasingly relaxing atmosphere (among WBTC fans, anyway). There is a selection of snaps below.
